Overview

Y Summer Day Camps are full of learning, adventure, active play and friendship. The Camp Director will be responsible for the overall operations of their specific summer program and supervision of camp associates. This position maintains the camp environment to ensure the wellbeing of the campers and to provide a positive camp experience.

 

This position is a seasonal position during summer day camp but may have the option for a full-time year round position in our before and after school programs.

Responsibilities

  • Create an Exceptional Camp Experience: Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and fun atmosphere by planning and implementing engaging themed activities, special events, excursions, and daily lessons that are age-appropriate and safe.
  • Ensure Compliance with Licensing and Safety Standards: Uphold all licensing requirements and safety protocols, maintaining a secure environment for campers and associates at all times. Regularly conduct safety checks on program equipment and facilities to meet YMCA and state standards.
  • Camper Supervision and Behavior Management: Use positive, respectful behavior management techniques, providing consistent reinforcement of camp rules and safety procedures. Support campers’ physical, emotional, and social development through positive discipline, guidance, and role modeling.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Quickly and appropriately respond to emergencies. Lead or support crisis management plans, including emergency procedures, to ensure the well-being of all campers and associates.
  • Honor Critical Camp Operating Weeks: Maintain full availability during the first and last week of the camp season, as these are essential for successful program launch and closeout. Vacation or extended time off is not permitted during these key weeks.
  • Maintain Consistent Leadership Coverage: Coordinate schedules to ensure uninterrupted leadership presence. Camp Directors should avoid overlapping time off to support safe, compliant, and smooth camp operations.
  • Organize Associate and Camper Schedules: With the Assistant Director or Co-Camp Director, develop and maintain daily routines, schedules, and program structures for up to 150 youth. Coordinate associate assignments and create cohesive schedules that align with lesson plans and budgeted hours.
  • Supervise and Support Camp Associates: Provide ongoing guidance, supervision, and support for camp associates, including Assistant Director and Counselors. Encourage a collaborative team atmosphere to foster good morale and well-being. Serve as a mentor and ensure accountability across all team members.
  • Parent and Family Communication: Manage or support effective communication with families regarding camp schedules, policies, and required paperwork, ensuring timely and accurate information is shared to keep parents informed and engaged.
  • Field Trips and Special Events: Plan, approve, or lead field trips and special events as part of the camp curriculum. Ensure proper resources, supplies, and safety measures are in place for each outing.
  • Maintain Accurate Records: Manage or assist in maintaining accurate records for participant attendance, family payments, and Accounts Receivables, as well as required documentation for state licensing and YMCA policies and required daily/weekly monitoring.
  • Promote a Positive Camp Environment: Create and maintain an atmosphere that is supportive, friendly, and conducive to building camper confidence and resilience. Ensure the environment is inclusive, safe, and engaging, meeting the needs of diverse camper backgrounds.
  • Identify and Respond to Camper and Associate Needs: Monitor the physical, emotional, and social needs of campers and associates, providing support and assistance as needed to ensure a positive camp experience for all.
  • Training and Development: Attend and actively participate in all required YMCA training sessions to enhance personal and professional growth. Implement learned techniques to ensure program quality and consistency.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Summer experience in a camp setting.
  • Minimum six months experience in a licensed program, YMCA experience preferred.
  • Hold or be able to obtain the required Director approval in Kansas or Missouri (depending on program location) as defined by state child-care licensing regulations.
  • Experience supervising associates and children.
  • Ability to plan, originate, organize and carry out daily and special programs.
  • Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.

  • Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED preferred.

 

AFTER HIRE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Attend all required pre-camp training sessions. Training dates will be provided in advance and participation is a condition of employment.
  • Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire and annually.
  • YMCA of Greater Kansas City new associate training course within 30 days of hire.
  • Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED within 30 days of hire.
  • MO licensed sites:
    • Medical examination report on MO Health and Senior Services Medical Examination Form within 30-days of hire.
    • Tuberculosis skin test, chest x-ray, or Risk Assessment for Tuberculosis Form must be completed within 30-days of hire.
  • Medications Training completed prior to the first day of camp.
  • Must maintain a current motor vehicle license and acceptable driving record that meets YMCA standards.
