Overview

The Sports Director leads dynamic sports programs across Wyandotte County (KS) and Jackson County (MO), creating experiences that inspire growth, teamwork, and community. This role designs and manages leagues, events, and services that deepen connections—from first-time participants to long-term athletes. As part of both the center management and sports service delivery teams, the Sports Director oversees all aspects of sports operations, including associates, volunteers, and budgets, while championing the Y’s mission, participant experience, and character development.

 

Hiring Range:  $42,000-$45,000

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan and execute a diverse schedule of sports leagues, clinics , classes and special events for all members and participants of all abilities and levels.
  • Oversee sports fields, sports gyms, maintenance, and operations; including quality checks and completion of required reports.
  • Ensures setting up for games happens at least sixty minutes prior to scheduled time, includes looking over the gym or fields for anything that could be harmful to participants during the game.
  • Must notify appropriate staff of any unsafe conditions, needed repairs, complaints, accidents, or injuries to staff or participants immediately. Proper reporting procedures must be followed.
  • Ensures a safe, fun, and controlled game atmosphere, the director has the authority to remove anyone from the premises, indoors and outside, that is deemed as behaving in a manner unbecoming a Y event.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises all full-time and part-time staff in a professional and objective manner; including hiring, discipline, work performance reviews and firing.
  • Conduct department staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Prepare annual and monthly budget.
  • Be a team player with all staff and volunteers.
  • Assist in the planning and participation of special events.
  • Assist in the volunteer development, community development and fund development activities within the assigned center. Responsible for raising financial contributions and community sponsorships for the Y.
  • Ensure self, staff, and volunteers are current and knowledgeable in all areas of certifications through the YMCA of the USA and other local agencies including First Aid, CPR (Adult, Child, Infant), and Administering Emergency Oxygen. Conduct regular in-services and training opportunities for staff and volunteers.
  • Attend community and association functions and events to promote the Y, its mission and programs.
  • Recruit, screen and train volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years’ experience in this or a related field.
  • Two years’ experience with hiring, training, mentoring and supervising staff / volunteer teams.
  • Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  • Able to make independent and sound decisions in a fast paced environment.
  • Able to exercise high levels of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Detail oriented with good organizational skills, and be multi-task proficient.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to adapt to new software.
  • Must have reliable transportation. Travel around the Greater Kansas City area is required.
  • Able to manage, monitor and achieve department budget.
  • First Aid / CPR (Adult, Child, Infant) / AED certifications preferred, training available.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedule, including some nights and most Saturdays.
