Overview

The Senior Director Safety & Risk Management is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive risk management and safety program across all operations of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City. This individual ensures that the YMCA meets all regulatory compliance requirements, promotes a culture of safety, and minimizes risk to associates, volunteers, members, and the organization as a whole. The director will collaborate with leadership and associates to maintain safe environments, reduce liability, and ensure emergency preparedness.

Hiring Range:  $70,000 - $75,000

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor the YMCA's risk management policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Lead the accreditation process and renewal for Praesidium.
  • Ensure leadership is monitoring and maintaining up to date certification in accordance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and guide a cross-functional safety committee made up of internal team members.
  • Provide guidance and support to departments on risk mitigation strategies.
  • Work closely with People Services on the process to ensure Child Abuse Prevention training is completed for associates and volunteers.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., OSHA).
  • Conduct regular safety audits and facility inspections to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain documentation and records for regulatory inspections and incident reports.
  • Develop and deliver training programs on safety practices, emergency procedures, child protection, and workplace safety.
  • Collaborate with People Services as needed on Workers Compensation.
  • Train associates and volunteers on incident reporting and response protocols.
  • Lead assigned investigations into accidents, injuries, and safety violations; maintain accurate and thorough reports.
  • Analyze trends and provide recommendations to reduce future incidents.
  • Coordinate with insurance providers on coverage, claims, and renewals.
  • Manage incident claims processes through reporting software.
  • Develop, implement, and test emergency response and crisis management plans for all YMCA locations.
  • Review and update safety and risk policies regularly; advise leadership on policy recommended improvements.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for activities related to the risk management program.
  • Stay up to date on industry standards and recommend changes as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, safety, or compliance, preferably in a nonprofit or multi-site organization.
  • Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  • Able to make independent and sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to exercise high levels of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Detail oriented with good organizational skills, and be multi-task proficient.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to adapt to new software.
  • Must have reliable transportation. Travel around the Greater Kansas City area is required.
