  • Overview

     

    Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Youth Volunteer Corps Summer Leader plans, recruits for and supervises service-learning projects all over the greater Kansas City area.   Youth Volunteer Corps of Greater Kansas City (YVC) hosted by the YMCA of Greater Kansas City is a part of a national network of programs that offer 11-18 year olds the opportunity to improve their community through volunteering. Diverse groups of youth volunteers from across the community are mobilized into teams to complete these projects at a variety of worthy nonprofit agencies.   Team members will serve for 10 weeks.

    Responsibilities

    Principal Activities

    The day-to-day assignments differ depending on the individual assignments, but the main duties include:

    • Collaborate with fellow team leaders, youth volunteers, and agencies in planning service-learning projects.
    • Mentor Youth Advisory Board and run their board meetings.
    • Mentor and provide on-site supervision for Bank of America Student Leaders.
    • Support fundraising and event planning for YVC program.
    • Recruit youth volunteers from a variety of sources to fill projects.
    • Supervise projects, ensuring a safe, educational, and rewarding volunteer experience.
    • Maintain regular communication with the youth, schools, and agencies in our network.
    • Develop service-learning curriculum to be taught on projects.
    • Communicate concerns and accomplishments with the YVC Program Director and Assistant Director.
    • Ensure accurate record-keeping of youth volunteer attendance, performance, and feedback.
    • Help plan and implement program events and youth volunteer recognition methods.
    • Update social media with events, projects, and fundraising efforts for Summer of Service.
    • Update all volunteer hours of youth, and send out verification letters as requested.
    • In the event of a local or state disaster declaration, AmeriCorps members may occasionally need to deploy to an affected area to participate in response or recovery operations.  During this time, service hours spent in response to that event may be counted towards the total required member hours of a given member. Any given member will spend no more than 120 days on disaster related activities in a given member year without the prior consent of the Kansas Volunteer Commission unless otherwise specified in the program’s approved grant and program design (in the case of programs with a disaster focus area) 

     

    After Hire Requirements

    • YMCA of Greater Kansas City new associate training courses within 30 days
    • Performance Excellence Planning completed within three months
    • Attend all required training including First Aid/CPR certification and Citizenship training

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma/GED.
    • Available Monday through Friday.
    • Have demonstrated experience volunteering and working with youth, especially youth ages 11-18.
    • Be willing to actively participate in service learning projects.
    • Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
    • Have a passion for helping youth succeed.
    • Must have reliable transportation and ability to travel to various Kansas City locations; working from the office in Overland Park on a regular basis.
    • Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills.
    • Comfortable leading groups between 5-20 individuals preferred.
    • Google Apps, Microsoft Office, and social media proficiency.
    • Knowledge of service-learning and not-for-profit sector preferred.
    • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking preferred.
    • U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens.
