The Y wants children to experience their best summer ever by offering a learning loss prevention program for school age children who are most at risk of falling behind in their reading skills over the summer. The SPARK! program, a national initiative with the Y, supports cognitive, physical and social-emotional growth while focusing on helping children read at grade level by the third grade.


The SPARK! Enrichment Leader assists in the planning, implementation and facilitation of curriculum and activities for students participating in the program, providing each participant with the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, spiritually and socially.




  • Plans and facilitates purposeful and engaging activities that complement the program’s thematic agenda and meets program quality and fidelity.
  • Follows program curriculum in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual needs of the participants.
  • Provides careful, attentive supervision; alert at all times.
  • Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior and understand positive youth development approaches.
  • Facilitates a program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.
  • Ensure 1:8 ratio is maintained throughout the enrichment portion of the day.
  • Guide children’s behavior in a respectful manner.
  • Carry out established roles for supervising the children’s health and enforcing YMCA safety regulations.
  • Identify emergency situations then respond quickly and appropriately and instruct children in emergency procedures.
  • Sets up for and cleans up after all classroom activities.
  • Collaborates with SPARK! Teacher to ensure enrichment activities are aligned with literacy instruction.
  • Promotes a team concept through a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions with others.
  • Attends and assists with parent/family events as designated by supervisor.
  • Maintains positive relationships with children, parents and other associates.
  • Help provide an atmosphere for developing positive morale and well-being amongst associates and participants.
  • Maintain all educational equipment and supplies in good order.
  • Exceed licensing standards.


  • Minimum age of 18.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum three months experience working with school age children.
  • Understanding of and ability to apply principles of quality youth development and programming.
  • Demonstrated public relations and leadership skills in working with program parents, school personnel, children and co-workers.
  • Sensitivity to clientele and staff representing a variety of family, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Active engagement with and supervision of children requiring physical stamina, alertness and emotional stability.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Commitment and desire to provide quality youth development services at all levels.
  • Have a general understanding of computer technology.
