Overview

Under the supervision of the Multi-Site Coordinator or Program Director, the School-age Coordinator shall provide an appropriately safe, caring and enriching environment for the children enrolled in the YMCA before and after school programs. This position will lead the coordination, planning, supervision and implementation of all activities. The School Age Coordinator may also be responsible for supervising a group of children. All services shall be provided in accordance with the standards established by the YMCA and state licensing regulations.

Responsibilities

 

  • Develops and maintains open, friendly, cooperative, and respectful relationships with families and other partners.
  • Interact with youth in a positive, warm and nurturing manner.
  • Uses effective listening and verbal skills including positive body language and tone of voice.
  • Continuously communicates with parents and caregivers around program goals, recognizing that all youth have individual needs, temperaments, characteristics and abilities, and develop at their own rate.
  • Uses best practices, guidelines and methods of youth development in daily work.
  • Reviews program plans and records to ensure consistency and accuracy, according to Association standards and expectations.
  • Organizes plans and keeps program records in accordance to Association standards.
  • Maintain knowledge of state licensing standards and commit to adhere to said standards.
  • Prepare weekly/monthly activity plans for an assigned group according to established educational and curriculum standards.
  • Provides coaching to assistants on a regular basis for positive areas and areas of improvement.
  • Work with supervisor to ensure families are up to date on payments, including monitoring accounts receivables and collecting fees following established guidelines.
  • All child care staff are mandated to report suspected child abuse and neglect and must notify appropriate associates of any suspected abuse, unsafe conditions, needed repairs, complaints, accidents, or injuries immediately.
  • Perform duties of Site Supervisor during Site Supervisor’s absence, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Qualifications to obtain a Program Director’s approval, in the State of Kansas, holding a license for the capacity of the site (see below).
  • Understanding of and ability to apply the principles of quality youth development and programming for both school-age and preschool children.
  • Demonstrated public relations and leadership skills in working with program parents, school personnel, state licensing representatives, children and co-workers.
  • Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  • Active involvement with and supervision of children requiring physical stamina, alertness, and emotional stability.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Commitment and desire to provide quality school age and early learning programming at all levels.

 

Qualifications for Program Director Approval

     One of the below options must be met to qualify:

  • Option 1:  Twelve credit hours in child development and early childhood education AND six months teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools.
  • Option 2:  A child development associate credential and one year of teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools.
  • Option 3:  An associate of arts degree or two-year certificate in child development AND one year of teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools
  • Option 4: An bachelor’s degree in child development or early childhood education, including a supervised practicum AND three month’s teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools

 

Additional After Hire Requirements

  • Tuberculosis Test and Physical required before classroom placement.
  • YMCA of Greater Kansas City new associate training course within 30 days.
  • First Aid and Infant/Child CPR within 30 days.
  • Symptoms of Illness required before classroom placement.
  • Medications Training required before classroom placement.
  • Health and safety training required before classroom placement.
  • Must obtain 24 hours in Kansas of in-service hours each calendar year
