Overview

The VISTA would be serving the immigrant and opportunity youth populations of the Greater Kansas City Area by reviewing and assessing how the YMCA Of GKC currently serves the target populations. The VISTA will also gather and assess data, identify and expand partnerships to engage immigrant communities in the YMCA of GKC, and provide analysis and information useful for grant and other funding applications. As a result of the VISTA's service, resources on breaking the cycle of poverty will be more readily available and Y associates will have a greater ability to communicate those resources.

Responsibilities

Analyze the use of diversity and inclusion and global programming & considerations.

 

Member Activity: Reviewing our current tools and resources that are used to engaging the target population. Assessing current data collection tools for whether they return the information needed for engaging the target population. Revising new information, and gathering tools including ways to measure the impact of present and future new programs for engaging and helping the immigrant and opportunity youth populations. Review the demographic profiles of local communities utilizing census and supplemental data resources. Assessing data on programs and target populations for use in program development and funding applications; research new possible sources of financing.

 

Deepen engagement opportunities within targeted populations to help connect them with resources applicable to their unique needs. Member Activity: Become familiar with current YMCA of Greater Kansas City outreach programs. Assessing existing and designing new tools to collect and analyze data specific to the effectiveness of current YMCA of Greater Kansas City outreach programs, including policy and environmental considerations of diversity. Identify areas for improvement in current programs. Exploring innovative solutions to develop better measures of outreach. Conduct focus groups with community members to not only better understand the needs of populations, but identify unique ways of engaging those populations with applicable programs (YMCA of Greater Kansas City and other area partnership programs)

 

Continue to deepen and identify new partnership opportunities for the YMCA of Greater Kansas City in its striving to help community populations. Member Activity: Learning more about the current partnerships the YMCA of Greater Kansas City has in place. Researching other organizations in the Greater Kansas City area, identifying new organizations and expand partnerships using Togetherhood to engage communities in the YMCA of GKC, and provide analysis and information useful for grant and other funding applications. Develop partnership agreement policies and initially managing communications between the new partners and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City. Analyze and assess the effectiveness of the partnerships, collecting data to refine partnership agreements and continuing to identify new partnership possibilities.

 

Review current methods and curricula for educating YMCA of Greater Kansas City associates and programs in place to assist them in breaking the cycle of poverty; design new program curricula and informational materials. Member Activity: Evaluate opportunities to expand ESL classes and make recommendations to YMCA of Greater KC. Train Y staff and volunteers on the materials to support working on the new immigrant project (i.e. ESL classes, other opportunities identified). Work to identify new program offering including curriculum and delivery and make recommendations to the YMCA of Greater KC.

 

VISTA Project Sustainability Tool Member Activity: Develop VISTA support model for future VISTA service members. Identify best practices in the support structure implemented for working with local Y staff. Add to the living document of the work of the service year, including, demographic profiles of local Ys served. Contact lists, Organizational biographies of partner organizations. Short profiles of key Y-USA stakeholders engaged with. How-to guides for orienting and completing assignments. Submit finished document to both site supervisor, as well as VISTA Coordinator at YMCA of the USA upon completion of service term

Living Allowance (paid directly by the federal government) is $990 per month ($11,880 for the year)

 
In addition, VISTAs receive a choice of ONE of the following upon successful completion of service:
 
Education Award in the amount of $5,815.00 eligible for future training and related expenses at Title IV schools, and/or to repay existing qualified federal student loans.

End-of-Service Stipend in the amount of $1,500.00.  Federal taxes are deducted from this amount.
