Overview

Under the supervision of the Early Learning Director and the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher shall assist the Lead Teacher and Early Learning Director in the day to day responsibilities in accordance with licensing and YMCA standards. In the licensing, QRS and accreditation process and throughout the year the Assistant Teacher is responsible for continued compliance with the Child Care Licensing regulations, QRS and accreditation standards at all times. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Application of principles of quality early childhood education and programming.
  • Public relations and leadership skills in working with perspective prospects, program parents, Early Learning staff, state licensing representatives and YMCA staff.
  • Sensitivity to clientele and staff representing a variety of family, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Active involvement with, and supervision of children required at all times.
  • Manages staff-to-child ratios within licensing standards and according to YMCA policies for classroom coverage.
  • Prepares materials, activities and environment ahead of time, as needed or assigned.
  • Monitors equipment and facility for safety and security purposes and follows through on concerns in a timely manner.
  • Cleans and picks up areas used by the program daily.
  • Has the ability to work with children with or without special needs.
  • Observes, assesses and contributes to the compilation of the child’s portfolio on a regular basis.
  • Takes the initiative without being told what to do.
  • Communicates program issues to lead teacher or director.
  • Ensures that the program is operated in a safe and purposeful manner, insuring that all licensing, QRS, accreditation and YMCA guidelines are met or exceeded.
  • Assists in insuring adequate staff coverage at all times.
  • Assist the lead teacher in lesson planning as requested by lead teacher or director.
  • Be able to take over in the lead teachers absence and incorporate written lesson plans.
  • Be a team player with all staff; will assist in other classrooms and / or centers as requested.
  • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Must participate in fund raising activities.
  • Must participate in special events.
  • All child care staff are mandated by the state of Kansas and Missouri to report suspected child abuse and neglect and must notify appropriate staff of any suspected abuse, unsafe conditions, needed repairs, complaints, accidents or injuries immediately.

 

Qualifications

  • Three months child care experience or six ECE college credits and knowledge in child development to
  • meet licensing requirements.
  • Three college credits in Early Childhood required for Missouri locations.
  • Willing to or currently pursuing a CDA, AA or BA/BS Early Childhood Education.
